LONDON (MarketWatch) — The U.S. dollar fell sharply on Monday, while the euro gained after media reports gave investors hope that policy makers will be able to get a grip on Europe's debt crisis.

Black Friday gives Asia reason to cheer

Sales on Black Friday-the big U.S. shopping day after Thanksgiving-rose 6.6% from a year ago. This bodes well for Asia's manufacturers, which still rely heavily on U.S. consumers. WSJ's Alex Frangos joins Asia Today.

The dollar index DXY -0.96% , which measures the performance of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, dropped to 78.973 from 79.688 in late North American trading on Friday.

The euro EURUSD +0.50%  rose to $1.3357 against the greenback from $1.3224 in late trading on Friday.

Investors lately have flocked to the U.S. dollar for its perceived safe-haven qualities as Europe’s debt troubles have escalated. Italian bond yields have climbed to levels markets regard as unsustainable in the long term, while Hungary and Belgium saw credit-rating downgrades late last week.

However, weekend reports suggested a range of fresh developments could be in the cards for Europe.

Separate news reports said that European officials have agreed on how to leverage a key rescue fund, and that French and German officials were discussing deeper integration. more

Gold rebounds; Europe, U.S. debt worry weigh

(Reuters) - Spot gold gained half a percent on Tuesday, as a decline of more than 2 percent attracted some buyers, while worries about debt crises in both the United States and the euro zone are expected to keep sentiment fragile.

U.S. lawmakers abandoned their high-profile effort to rein in the country's ballooning debt on Monday, but rating agencies Standard & Poor's and Moody's said there will be no immediate downgrade of the country's credit ratings.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the debt crisis swept closer to the heart of Europe as Moody's warned about France's credit ratings outlook.

"Today there has been some buying interest on the physical market, although overall trading is thin," said Peter Fung, head of dealing at Wing Fung Precious Metals in Hong Kong.

"The strength in dollar is suppressing gold prices, but for the long term, people would still want to keep gold as a safe haven." more

Malaysia Dept RM 407 billion...WOW!

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Datuk Seri Idris Jala said today that Malaysia could still become bankrupt within a decade if it spends borrowed money on operational expenditure such as subsidies instead of investing the cash.

“If our economy grows less than four per cent... and we don’t cut our operating expenditure, if we borrow at 12.5 per cent, if our annual debt rises to 12.5 per cent and our revenue does not grow, then it will happen,” Idris said today after announcing the latest investment updates for the government’s economic transformation programme (ETP).

The performance management minister triggered alarm bells with his controversial bankruptcy forecast last year.

Malaysia’s national debt rose by 12.3 per cent to over RM407 billion last year, according to the Auditor-General’s latest report released last week.  read more
