Canadian Olympic gold coins 'to be part of permanent display'

A collection of commemorative coins - including some gold items - designed in celebration of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada are set to go on permanent display in Switzerland.

The coins - which include the entire Vancouver 2010 circulation collection, as well as the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin designed specifically for the event - were presented by Royal Canadian Mint chief executive officer and president Ian Bennett to Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee.

All the coins presented during the special ceremony will be showcased at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland on a permanent basis.

"We are honoured to be a part of the historic Olympic Museum and it is our hope that people from around the world will treasure these elegant reminders of the mint's celebration of an exceptional moment in Canadian sporting history," Mr Bennett commented.

According to the Swiss tourism department, the museum is the largest information centre in the world relating to the Olympic games.

From May to September, it is open every day, while in the off-peak months from October to April, the facility is closed on Mondays.
